If you were to stand inside of the painting Outdoor Shower
this would be your view
if the blueberry bushes and a portion of the bluff were moved slightly to the left
and the October sun broke through the clouds
long enough to dry your towel so you could dry yourself.

And standing on those weathered cedar planks
you might be able to taste
as I can even here in my Pennsylvania studio
the salty spray of the ocean
being washed away
from your late afternoon’s walk on Squibnocket beach.

And if you’re very clever, and oh so lucky
in the distance, over your right shoulder
you will be able to smell the clams
just beginning to open
into the steaming garlic and wine sauce.

And there… just past the old wire soap holder
and across the patchwork meadow
is that a pair of deer
stopping to listen
to a faint whisper of the Glenn Miller orchestra
tuning up for the evening’s soundtrack.
