My collection of books on Andrew Wyeth are worn well.
Aunt Millie would have been very upset with the dog eared corners
and the many notes penciled in the margins.

They get dragged from easel to kitchen table and even out into the yard at times
whenever the muse needs reminding.

This winter I was paging through the book Wonderous Strange
the catalogue for a show that included the works of all three generations of Wyeths and their mentors
when I came upon an early painting I had not noticed before…Baron Philippe 1981.

I kept returning to the image and the book
layed open to this page on a corner of the kitchen table
when weeks later I heard the news of his death.

This painting is by way of an answering tribute
across the Pennsylvania fields
from my studio to his.
