A Freshening Breeze

I couldn’t pass up this old porthole at Jane’s Antique shop in Menemsha last fall.

You can see that it is tiny and the verdigris suggests

that it is older than the teacup.

She said that her patrons like to use these old windows in outdoor showers.

I brought it home to the studio

and set it into a panel of old barn siding

so I could see what happens when the sun shines through it

and into the cup.

Outdoor showers are not exactly the same here in the Pennsylvania woodlands

as they are on the island of Martha’s Vineyard.

But I can remember the feel of a gentle breeze coming in off the ocean…

and under a fluffy white towel.
