When the call went out for a fresh stalk of field corn I knew my friend Susan was up to the
task. In spite of the late fall harvests, she was able to rustle up two perfect specimens. Tall and straight
as soldiers, they took up the entire length of her van and were delivered to my cabin door with
armfuls of other treasures from her glorious gardens.

The remaining fifty feet of their journey to my treetop studio was another story.
The brittle tips of the eight foot lengths didn’t survive the tight turn at the landing and,
well… as Louis Pasteur wrote, (and so often happens with serendipity)
“Chance favors the prepared mind”.

And my studio shelves are nothing if not prepared.
The maze of mud and gnarled root system was the perfect counterpoint
for the tightly woven whisk of a broom.
Each are a marriage of beauty and utility.
With color and grace that firmly echoes in this Pennsylvania soul.
