Last year I began to do sketches for a large portrait of the New Ag Hall.
The weather then was like this year’s early summer’s
days and days of dreary soggy rain.

The shingles on the long barn
were soaked a black dark Van Dyke Brown
and with the sparse white trim
the building had the look of a pursed lipped puritan preacher
right off the boat from Plimoth.

Tall buckled hat
severely starched collar
kneeling deeply into the earth
stormy dark and righteous.

And somewhere at its center
behind the forthright mast of a pierced wooden column
underneath the dank woolen dogma
and competing for the patina of brimstone
was a fiery shaft of light within
revealing a square of warm soft gold.

The heart of a soulful community
keeping vigil
keeping time.
