This is a road
or what once was a road
and is now more like a trail
with ruts worn deeper than a lobster pot
by hundreds of years
of wagon and carriage wheels
and humans traveling softly
and animals seeking shelter…from the humans.

It runs deep through the middle island woods
and even the strongest of beams
find it a challenge
to light a travelers way.

So the mood was there
and the dappled light
and the amber leaves
blowing in between the oaks.

The walking stick was leaning
just as you see it there
but search as I might
there was no Ichabod to be found.

I have the stick here now
next to the easel
and it is a great comfort
to know that I have something by my side
which has already known something
of the deep.
