The brave ones are at sea.
One to a boat
the ladies who kayak
are gliding across the water.

Gulliver swims out to follow,
looks back to find me standing alone on the water’s edge,
and turns around.

Together she and I are left to explore the marshy grasses,
abandoned shacks and hard rock corners of the shore.
She runs in and out of the cool October waves in her big dog glory.
I let my eyes follow the edges.

The tree line bristles against the sky.
A soft transition to field and grass bending in the wind.
Hard weathered wood of the dock
and deep indigo shadows in the waters underneath.
Boats leaning back on the granite walls.
Slatted rope walk disappearing into the sea.

Gully nudges my side.
Three small dots at the opening to the channel.
The mariners return.
