Storms have come through every night this week.
Dark indigo clouds and mean peels of rolling thunder.
In the summer studio there is little sky to see through the dense foliage.
Gully is my early warning system.
Long before the rains come she can sense an approaching storm.
One ear perks up then her head follows
and she uncurls her big black frame
leaves her bed
and moves over to my corner.

Most of this painting has been done with a wind driven rain
blowing the early summer leaves around outside.
While inside, the brave Bernese Mountain Dog,
wedged between my feet and the oak uprights of the easel,
does her best to reassure me
that we are safe
And I am surely loved.

Thus the occasional stray hair in the varnish.
