Sunrise at Lake Meade

For the Patton Family

Gully and I woke at 5 to make it to this lake before sunrise.
We had made several earlier attempts
but a certain Bernese Mt. Dog,
who shall remain nameless,
is sometimes difficult to rouse from her beauty sleep.

I’m glad it worked out that it was a November morning though.
We never would have seen all that sky through the leaves,
and the pattern of shadows that stroked the land before us
would have been lost to the dappled dark.

This is a man made lake.
Surrounded by a burgeoning community of families.
The Pattons are gentle busy people who come here
to their corner of the water’s edge
to find some peace and reconnect with the planet and each other.

I thought they would appreciate seeing it as I do.
With nary a human footprint.
Except for the feeder for the feathered ones.

With great thanks for true patronship.
