This painting was on exhibit out in Denver at Gallery 1261 and
when the gallery director called to ask if I had any background info on it
for an interested patron I sent her this reply…
There’s always a story…
I listen to audio books while I paint
and when I checked my library and saw a book by Lawrence Gladstone
called The Astronomer it seemed like the perfect fit
since I was beginning the Big Dipper painting.
The story began to center around Copernicus
and his signature was mentioned as I clue, I think
so I wanted more background
and when I googled it and saw the actual signature
I loved the complexity
and character of the line itself
and thought it would be fun to tuck it behind the other notes
sticking out from the frame as a sort of clue of my own.
I recommend the book by the way
if you like historical mysteries
and have several days of painting awaiting you.
