Gulliver and I tiptoed past Herself
asleep beneath the quilted down.
Steam rising from the cup of french roast,
the pup following the trails left by the night visitors,
I turned to greet the ocean.
A magnificently dramatic sky stretched all the way across the horizon.
I sat in silence for over an hour swimming in the colors and letting go.

A hand came to rest on my shoulder.
The big mountain dog leaned at my side.
The three of us held on.

Later that afternoon,
when M and Gracie strolled into the gallery,
the conversation began with the morning sky
that we had each witnessed from separate bluffs,
and then wove it’s way through baseball and golf
and politics and scandal and on and on to Mary Oliver’s poetry…

well…it was then I was reminded
that out there on the edge of the planet
at the beginning of a new day…
we are
none of us
alone.
