Breakfast at the Daggett House

When this Vineyard landmark was sold to a private owner,
one of my favorite breakfasts spot on the east coast was closed.
I was walking down this street in Edgartown one frosty December
morning and saw that they had demolished the back half of the house.
Three stories open to the salty harbor air which had probably not
known such a breeze ever in their lifetime.
I was struck by the cabinetry hanging out there and the layers
of stone and wood and brick.
I seem to remember some legend about a secret passage behind that wall.
Exposed the way it was that day
it looks like there could have been a stairway behind the door.
Wonder where it lead.
PS – as of this writing,
the very best breakfasts on the island can be found at the Art Cliff diner,
which has plans to renovate but will reopen.
