There’s a wonderful part in Cider House Rules
when, after Dr. Larch reads the orphans their bedtime story at night
and he shuts off the light
he turns to leave the attic room
and whispers to them…
“Goodnight you Princes of Maine,
you Kings of New England.”

Such a simple act of grace.
To raise the lonely orphan to the heights of a king.
There too goes the tiny cedar sapling.
Grown strong and proud
to shelter all you Kings of New England.
